Colombia: Pictures and Stories Booksigning

Sandy and Rossie Fisher

Join Sandy Fisher for a special booksigning at the New Dominion Bookshop in Charlottesville Thursday, August 4th at 5:30 p.m. Sandy’s book Colombia: Pictures and Stories is a pictorial narrative, compiled from his time in the Peace Corps in Colombia during the 1960’s and coincides with the Peace Corps’ 50th anniversary.

Sandy will talk about his journey- both in the Peace Corps and in the creative process of writing his book.

During his time in Colombia, Sandy worked in community development in Tenjo, outside of Bogota. After a year there, he became a volunteer leader based in Barranquilla on the Caribbean coast overseeing 20 different sites.

After finishing his Peace Corps tour, he graduated from Columbia University and then returned to Colombia, South America to run an
experimental cattle ranch in Los Llanos for eight years with his wife Rossie.  He then came back to the United States to become one of the first executive directors of a camp in Virginia for medically handicapped kids.

Sandy and Rossie returned to their farming roots which began in the Peace Corps and founded Brookview Farm in Manakin-Sabot which became one of central Virginia’s first certified organic farms. They raise grass-fed and grass-finished beef which can be purchased through Lulu’s Local Food

Racing Fever at Southern States

In 1973, Secretariat captured the hearts of the American public and took the racing world by storm when he won the legendary Triple Crown, setting race records in both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. Owned by Penny Chenery, Big Red was foaled in Virginia at the famous racing stable at the Meadow and forever put Virginia on the map of Thoroughbred horse racing.

Just released is a new book unlike any other on Secretariat. Authored by Kate Chenery Tweedy, daughter of Penny Chenery, Secretariat’s Meadow- The Land, The Family, The Legend gives readers an inside look at over 200 never-before published pictures from Penny’s private collection and the stories that bring them to life.

Arriving in Richmond Friday for the movie premier, Kate makes the first stop on her Virginia book tour at Southern States West Broad, 8718 West Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23294. (804) 747-9315.

This unique event also celebrates the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF.) On hand will be Covert Action (Secretariat’s grandson, ex-racehorse and star of the TRF) making a rare public appearance.

The TRF rescues racehorses when they can no longer compete at the track due to age, injury or other circumstances. Many of the horses are rehabilitated and available for adoption and a chance at new careers. The TRF has partnered locally with the VDOC in the first program of its kind in Virginia called Second Chances at James River. Based at the James River Work Center, the program matches inmates with horses. The horses are rehabilitated and the inmates gain job skills and a certification allowing them to work in the horse industy on release from prison.

Make plans to attend “Secretariat Day at Southern States”  from noon to 3:00. Feeling lucky? Don’t miss your chance to win one of several excellent door prizes including 500 pounds of Legends or Southern States horse grain, a signed copy of Secretariat’s Meadow, a bridle, racing-themed glassware, home accessories and some of your favorite animal health products. Thanks to our sponsors Southern States, Dementi Milestone Publishing and Kate Chenery Tweedy, Toklat, GT Reid and Farnam.

Books will be available for sale on site ($29.99) and Kate will be happy to sign your copy. For every book sold that day, a donation will be made to the TRF.
